What a former college instructor really thinks…

Why My Ph.D. Lets Me Get Away With Everything on this Blog

Many of my regular readers are probably familiar with three basic facts about me:

1.  I have a Ph.D.

2. I am unemployed.

3. I blog anonymously.

The anonymous blogging thing may seem like a no-brainer to many of you.  You probably think that a lot of my humor would turn off potential employers who are looking for someone a little less cruel, vicious, and outlandish.  Of course, you’d be wrong… as usual.

It's easier to be forgiven for cruel acts than for being highly educated.

Now that I have left the university, I am often confronted by people who believe that Ph.D.-holders are incapable of interacting with “normal” people or being an enjoyable colleague to have around.  The education is supposed to turn you into a lifeless walking brain.  Hooray for stereotypes, and all that other stuff!

But that situation is also liberating when I sit down to blog.  If a company is ever able to attach my real name to this blog, what could they possibly say against me?  No matter how brutal or grotesque I become around here, I will always be more wonderful on this blog than they think I’d be in the office.   Despite that, I have no intention of going public with my true identity any time soon.  That also means I won’t be posting any nude photos of myself; I apologize for the disappointment.

And there’s one more interesting fact to consider.  After less than five weeks in existence, this blog is already inching towards Alexa’s top million websites for the past month.  So… yeah.  Stupid Ph.D. person can’t connect with other people.  Right…

PS: If you would like me to post nude photos of you, please send them to me and I will consider putting them on my test blog. If you don’t want me to post nude photos of you, please send them to me anyway and I promise not to post them.   It’s almost wonderful to live in a world where asking people for nude photos is less likely to get me in trouble than writing intellectual posts about philosophy or history.   On the other hand, a world where nude photos are valued more than knowledge is a world where Sarah Palin can become president.

  1. I didn’t even finish…you can jest, all you want, but the truth is, you write because you have to write. I like your blog, and I laugh my ass off (I know, I know….I’m about to contradict myself), but, it’s easy to make fun of people. I’m new here, and this may have already happened. However, I challenge you to make fun of yourself. It’s along the lines of, “If you can dish it…”, and all that. Jest, as if you were reading your blog, for the first time. Like I said, I like your writing, and I would be completely happy to give you a run for your (not actually) money. In other words, in case you’re not as smart as you appear to pretend to be, I’ll jest, in lieu of you. Up to it?

    • I’d be happy to see you do something like that. I know that prettierinpink is already formulating something about me, so you may have a little competition.

And unless I’m forgetting something, I haven’t done any self-deprecating humor yet. However, I have done the “turning the mirror on myself” thing. The dominant part of this blog (until I launched the Victimizing Other Bloggers series recently) was educational humor that had strong links to what I have witnessed in my professional life. So I think what you may be looking for is in this post from my third day of blogging:

      Cannibals in the Classroom

And then take a look at the first long paragraph on my “About Me” page.

In the end, it all comes down to the person. Stereotypes are just that – stereotypes. No matter what people think, just because you have an education does not mean that you’re a lifeless walking brain, as you put it.
Write because you want to; write about what you want to. In the end, what’s most important is that you enjoy what you do.
Keep up the great work on this blog!

    • Thanks. I wish the folks in HR held a few less of those stereotypes, though…

No problem. Don’t we all? Stereotypes are a problem that are much too common.

  7. that’s the beauty of being anonymous. you can say whatever you wanna say without being afraid of repercussions. i have two other blogs aside from the one i have right now, and they are totally the opposite of what i normally write about. my only explanation as to why is that there are things that i cannot simply let other people know about me, but i still want to express the real me. web all have stuff we’d like to keep…
